Bilingual Outreach Workers (Toledo)

Each year more than 30,000 agricultural workers and family members work in Ohio. They work with many hand-harvest crops, including cucumbers, tomatoes, lettuces, onions, radishes, and peppers. They also work in packing sheds, grading stations, nurseries, greenhouses, and food processing plants.

Advocates for Basic Legal Equality, Inc. (ABLE), a non-profit law firm, is hiring two Outreach Workers to help the attorneys and staff in its Toledo office extend legal services to these workers and their families throughout Ohio.

Many agricultural workers encounter legal problems arising from violations of the Fair Labor Standards Act, the Migrant and Seasonal Agricultural Worker Protection Act, and other federal and state protective statutes, as well as problems with tax, immigration, environmental hazards, sexual harassment, government benefits, housing, domestic violence, civil rights, education, and other issues.

The primary responsibility of the Outreach Workers is to visit agricultural labor camps in Ohio, during the evening, informing workers about our services and workers’ rights, and accepting applications for legal assistance. Additional duties include community legal education, investigation and research, and other work assigned by ABLE advocates. This is a full-time, temporary position from mid-May 2023 through mid-August 2023, with a possible extension, located in ABLE’s Toledo office. Pay is $20.00 per hour, 35-40 hours per week. Outreach Workers must have a valid driver’s license, be insurable, and have access to an automobile. ABLE generally will have a car available for outreach, but Outreach Workers occasionally may need to use their own vehicles. ABLE will reimburse for authorized travel expenses.

We are looking for persons committed to social justice for agricultural workers who are fluent in Spanish, have excellent organizational and writing skills, can relate well with low-income clients and community groups, are computer proficient, and have a strong commitment to the rule of law. Daytime, evening, and weekend work and travel required. Position may require overnight trips. ABLE will provide training and daily supervision by experienced staff, both attorneys and paralegals.
