Reports to:                                    SENIOR DIRECTOR, OUTREACH & ADVOCACY

STATEMENT OF THE JOB:

Reporting to the Sr. Director of Outreach & Advocacy, the Communications Project Specialist will help enhance the communication effectiveness of the Impact and Outreach Department, as well as the organization at-large, by strengthening internal communication and marketing project management; assisting in external community-wide campaigns that bolster awareness of local programs and United Way; and serve as a strategist for the organization on the proper tools to utilize (print, digital, etc.) to speak with niche audiences.

The Impact and Outreach department encompasses individuals who oversee United Way’s community programming functionalities, engagement strategy, public relations, communications and advocacy outreach.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Work closely with colleagues on public relations, engagement or community impact communication project needs
  • Manage the organization-wide communications calendar
  • Oversee the organization’s email marketing efforts and email content development
  • Assist with time-sensitive and seasonal projects, such as United Way fundraising campaign materials and communications support for United Way community events
  • Assist with promoting internal programs or initiatives, such as United Way 2-1-1, and external granted programs that impact kids, adults and families in Lucas, Ottawa and Wood County
  • Ensure that internal departments know how to properly communicate about United Way granted programs by creating fact sheets, talking points, briefings, etc.
  • Be an “ear to the ground” internally, ensuring staffers have the communications and marketing materials they need to be successful
  • Have an eye for design and visual communication; able to converse with designers, printing vendors, etc. on desired outcomes for digital, print, etc. products
  • Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE & REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE:

  • Three or more years of professional experience in the expectations / areas listed above
  • Strong writing skills and verbal communication skills are a must
  • Ability to synthesize and simplify complex information is a must
  • Professional or academic background in marketing, communications, public relations, advertising, advertising account management, sales, visual communication design / technology
  • Experience in the nonprofit sector is preferred; however, candidates will be “graded” predominately on experience
  • Those who hold a bachelor’s degree, GED/H.S. diploma will be considered

  • Excellent problem-solving skills, research skills and ability to follow-through.
