Organization Background:

Founded in 1992, After-School All-Stars (ASAS) is a national non-profit organization which provides free, daily afterschool programs to nearly 75,000 children in need on over 350 school sites in 19 chapters across the U.S. Our goals for our All Stars is to be healthy and active, to graduate high school, to find a job that they love and to give back to their communities. We achieve this by identifying and fueling our students’ individual passions, tying their interests to tailored academic support, enrichment and health and fitness programming.

The Ohio chapter of ASAS was founded in 2000 in Columbus and expanded to serve two additional cities in 2012. Currently ASAS Ohio offers programming to students in Columbus and Toledo with a separate office in Cleveland run by the ASAS Cleveland team.

Our model:

ASAS provides programs and transformative opportunities that help students develop the skills, knowledge, and habits needed to succeed in life, school, and their future career.  We deliver comprehensive programs to our students for three hours a day Monday-Friday in four primary focus areas: Academics, Health & Fitness, Social-Emotional Learning, and Enrichment. 

During our first programming hour, students transition from the school day to the after-school program by enjoying a warm meal and engaging in active play activities. This less structured time ensures students have devoted screen-free time as well as unstructured play time which has been shown to support the development of social emotional skills, in particular communication and collaboration skills. 

After meal time students rotate between 4 blocks: 

  • Block A: Homework support and self directed sensory boxes
  • Block B: LitART–ASAS Ohio’s chosen literacy intervention program.  
  • Block C: iReady Tech Time of Cultural Studies–iReady is a comprehensive assessment and instructional program students use during the school day. The academic based cultural studies class focuses on current events and the telling of stories of people from all walks of life as well as allowing our own students a space to share their stories.
  • Block D: Daily rotation between enrichment, social-emotional learning, or health and fitness activities.

A Unique Opportunity:

ASAS is currently seeking an exceptional and dynamic educator as the Education Coordinator, reporting to the Program Manager. The Education Coordinator’s primary responsibilities will include selecting appropriate curricula, developing new curricula, and improving existing curricula for ASAS Ohio to more strategically meet student needs. They will conduct research and make recommendations, as well as work with programming staff to evaluate student data, existing curricula and assess the quality of instruction.

This leader will play a pivotal role in adapting our previously school-based model to the changing learning environment for students today as a result of COVID-19. Adaptations may include, virtual programming, modified school-based programming, or housing authority based programming. Education Coordinator Job Overview:

The Education Coordinator (EC) should embody ASAS’s core values: accountable, collaborative, transparent, proactive, and entrepreneurial and will demonstrate the ability to lead, coach, and train program staff to accomplish established objectives. This position requires flexibility to travel locally, excellent relationship-building and collaboration skills, superb organizational skills and attention to detail, the ability to juggle multiple projects and tasks simultaneously, and a commitment to the mission of ASAS. This position is required to attend after school programs and events, including occasional weekends and evenings.

The Education Coordinator works alongside the Program Manager and (Senior) Site Managers to use student data from DESSA, external evaluations, i-Ready and LitArt to drive lesson development and selection, program improvement, and student outcomes. The (Senior) Site Managers oversees the daily management of the after-school program at their assigned site, including coordinating daily upkeep of the attendance database system, engaging families, and maintaining site-based relationships with administrators and teachers. In collaboration with each (Senior) Site Managers, the Education Coordinator creates and implements staff training based on daily observations of the Program Leaders (the staff members responsible for lesson execution) to improve lesson execution and program quality.

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Utilize data to strategically select and adapt lesson plans to meet site specific student population and in accordance with the ASAS Program Model, mission, goals, and national initiatives of ASAS Ohio 
  • Coordinate annual data-driven professional development plan and activities to support Program Leader growth and student outcomes
  • Provide presentations to small and large groups of Program Leaders to accelerate the use of exemplary instructional practices to improve student achievement
  • Keep current with educational developments and the literature in the field of education and youth development
  • Examine student data reports and collaborate with (Senior) Site Managers to create instructional plans and strategies to ensure programming activities are meeting student needs
  • Research instructional strategies and resources for ongoing professional development, Program Leader growth, and effective classroom management
  • Conduct demonstration lessons and mentor Program Leaders to develop their pedagogy 
  • Be visible in classrooms and throughout programming
  • Seek out and incorporate lesson plans that address student interests, build skills, and are developmentally appropriate
  • Participate in the hiring and recruiting process for Program Leaders and (Senior) Site Managers
  • Establish a strong collaborative relationship and consistent line of communication with site administration, site staff, community programs, program staff and parents
  • Design the family and site engagement plan to foster a sense of community by creating a unique site experience and culture. Including but not limited to a behavior management plan, etc.
  • In coordination with the (Senior) Site Manager, develop a student recruitment and retention plan  
  • Attend CampUs (a week-long overnight summer camp) where you will stay overnight and implement the curriculum, manage student behavior, and supervise staff over approximately 6 days with tentative work hours from 7:00am to 11:00pm

Travel

Travel is primarily local during the business day. There may be some travel to other ASAS Ohio offices in the state on a quarterly basis.

Work Environment

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.

This job operates in a child care environment but is based in an office. The position will interact with children in classrooms, regularly. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets, and fax machines, along with moving sports and recreational equipment. The noise level in the work environment is moderate.

Who Should Apply?

The Education Coordinator is expected to have at least 2-3 years of classroom teaching experience. The EC must be energetic, youth-focused, and proactive, with a passion for providing high-quality programming to youth. EC applicants should have experience designing and executing lesson plans in a K-8 setting and specific experience coaching and developing staff in a school, day camp or community youth outreach setting. Strong written and oral communication skills are essential. An understanding of the local nonprofit, education landscape in Ohio is preferable. This position is ideal for an education leader with a passion for building an organization and a commitment to continuing student education outside of the classroom.

Education and/or Certification Requirements:

  • Undergraduate Degree
  • Pass an FBI and BCI&I background check 

Within 3 months of hire:

  • CPR
  • First Aid
  • Suspected Child Abuse- Mandated Report Training
  • Communicable Disease Training

Skills and Experience:

  • A minimum of two years of classroom teaching experience
  • Experience working with underserved populations, preferably underserved youth within public school systems
  • Strong understanding of how children and youth develop, and the factors that influence child development
  • Prior experience of design of training and development for school-based teams
  • Evidence of effective curriculum development and delivery to students within traditional classroom settings
  • Demonstrated skills and experience observing practice, providing constructive feedback, and implementing a coaching plan against targeted skill gaps
  • Ability to disaggregate, interpret and analyze student data
  • Superior organizational, time management, and multi-tasking skills
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills: the ability to effectively liaise with and motivate a variety of people in a multicultural entrepreneurial environment
  • Ability to maintain a flexible schedule, including working some evenings and weekends as needed
  • Fluency in Spanish or Somali is highly desirable
