Reports To: Executive Director

Salary: $55,000-$60,000

Type Of Position: Full Time Exempt. Days, nights, weekends, and offsite events required.

Incentives: Vacation accrual, optional health, dental, and eye insurance coverage at an 80/20 premium split

 

ABOUT SAME CAFÉ

So All May Eat / SAME Café creates community through healthy food access and is the longest running nonprofit restaurant in the country! We provide healthy meals to everyone, regardless of ability to pay. Each guest who comes through the door is treated exactly the same and orders from the daily-changing menu and then participates in the mission by donating time, money, or produce

After nearly 15 years of serving meals to guests experiencing food insecurity in Denver, we are thrilled to be expanding nationally, starting with SAME Café Toledo!

 

ESSENTIAL JOB DESCRIPTION

The Executive Chef is responsible for all of the food coming out of the kitchen and creating a welcoming and safe environment for all guests and volunteers. This position will be responsible for monitoring the quality of the food, following all food safety regulations, creating new recipes, and coordinating the entire kitchen. In addition, the Executive Chef will be responsible for hiring and training all new kitchen staff.  

In this position you will often be required to lift up to 50- pounds, stand for long periods of time, bend, reach, go up and down steps, and work in extreme temperatures, and work with Executive Director and staff to deescalate guests and volunteers. The Executive Chef will also be required to drive company vehicles. 

 

JOB DUTIES

Back of House (BOH) Management

  • Ensure quality of food, flavors, and presentation 
  • Ensure compliance with all Health Department and SAME health and safety standards
  • Ensure compliance with Certifiably Green standards
  • Manage kitchen staff and meet weekly one-on-one with staff
  • Maintain product rotation and usage 
  • Manage weekly ordering, pickups, and deliveries
  • Recipe and menu planning and implementation as needed
  • Manage catering opportunities and events
  • Provide regular training for staff and volunteers with the Executive Director and Denver leadership team
  • Post messages daily on social media that are consistent with the organizational branding standards and ethos 
  • Creating a daily menu that incorporates produce donations
  • Other duties as assigned

Administrative Management

  • Track food spending and ensure that SAME Café Denver stays within the monthly budget
  • Track food waste in the Café
  • Purchasing and inventory of product
  • Track food donations
  • Work with Executive Director to plan fundraising events and provide food as needed
  • Work with Executive Director to oversee training and onboarding of new staff
  • Create and manage trauma informed care and safety trainings for staff and volunteers with the Executive Director and Executive Director
  • Assist in managing community service volunteers, relations with parole/probation officers, and recording service hours
  • Other duties as assigned

Cook to Work Management 

  • Work with other staff to rain participants in the C2W modules
  • Work with other staff to oversee and guide participants through modules
  • Other duties as assigned

Partnership Development and Management 

  • Work with Executive Director to expand community partnerships and manage relationships with partners
  • Give presentations about SAME to groups in the Café 
  • Other duties as assigned

  • Proven leadership experience, which includes managing people, teams, and budgets 
  • Experience with community building, networking, and creating partnerships
  • Experience with fundraising and public messaging
  • Trauma informed care background 
  • Able to create delicious meals from available ingredients

We are requesting that all applicants have experience working in a restaurant as a Chef or Kitchen Manager and have extensive knowledge in teaching culinary skills. Experience in instructing a culinary program and working with marginalized populations is preferred. ServSafe Managers certification is a plus but a class and test will be provided upon employment if needed.

Selected candidates will be asked to do two interviews. The first interview will be with the Toledo Executive Director and SAME CEO Brad Reubendale. The second interview will include the SAME Café Denver team. A third interview and small project may also be required.

Candidates who are selected to participate in a 2nd interview will be compensated at $28/hr for the second interview (as well as the third interview and project if required).
