Executive Director – Heartbeat of Toledo
Position Available: Executive Director
Location: West Sylvania Office
Reports to: Board of Directors
Job Status: Full-time (40 hours/week), evening and weekends
Job Summary
The Executive Director is responsible for the successful leadership and management of Heartbeat of
Toledo, according to the strategic direction set by the Board of Directors. The Executive Director leads
with passion and casts vision aligned with Heartbeat of Toledo’s mission to be the best source of
information and support to women facing pregnancies and to help moms, dads, and babies in need.
Minimum Qualifications:
Strong problem-solving and administrative competence with ability to supervise personnel and
maintain a positive, team environment.
Proficiency in computer skills, including Microsoft Word and Excel, business applications and
social networks.
Bachelor’s degree required: Master’s degree preferred.
5-10 years of relevant experience in non-profit leadership, including fund-raising, grant writing,
and program development.
Flexible schedule for occasional evening and weekend work.
Past success working with a Board of Directors.
Strong commitment to and understanding of life-affirming principles.
Superior writing, speaking, and communication skills.
Ability to maintain composure and professionalism when met with challenging situations.
Key Responsibilities:
Leadership
o Participate with the Board of Directors in developing a vision and strategic plan to guide
Heartbeat
o Foster effective team work between the Board and the Executive Director and between
the Executive Director and staff
o Represent Heartbeat at community activities to enhance the organizations community
profile
Operational planning and management
o Develop an operational plan which incorporates goals and objectives that work towards
the strategic direction of Heartbeat
o Ensure that the operation and implementation of Heartbeat’s programming meets the
expectations of its clients, Board and donors
o Oversee the efficient and effective day-to-day operation of Heartbeat
Programming planning and management
o Oversee the planning, implementation and evaluation of Heartbeat’s programs and
services, including fundraising and development efforts
o Ensure that the programs and services offered by Heartbeat contribute to the mission
and reflect the priorities of the Board
o Ensure an organizational culture where staff and volunteers understand and support the
vision and mission and are equipped with the tools to carry it out
Human resources planning and management
o Oversee the implementation of the human resources policies, procedures and practices
including the development of job description for all staff
o Establish a positive, healthy and safe work environment in accordance with all
appropriate legislation and regulations
o Recruit, interview and select staff that have the right technical and personal abilities to
help further Heartbeat’s mission
Financial planning and management
o Work with Executive Board to prepare a comprehensive budget
o Research funding sources and oversee the development of fundraising plans and write
funding proposals to increase the funds of Heartbeat
o Participate in fundraising activities
Community relations/advocacy
o Communicate with stakeholders to keep them informed of the work of Heartbeat and to
identify changes to the community served by Heartbeat
o Establish good working relationships and collaboration arrangements with community
groups, funders, politicians and other organizations to help achieve the goals of the
organizations
o Speak on behalf of Heartbeat at various community events
Risk management
o Identify and evaluate the risks to Heartbeat’s people (clients, staff, management,
volunteers), property, finances, goodwill, and image and implement measures to control
risks
