Financial Coach

Financial Opportunity Centers (FOCs) are community-based centers that focus on the financial bottom line for low-to-moderate income individuals. This means changing people’s financial behavior in a way that encourages them to make a long-term commitment to increasing income, decreasing expenses and acquiring assets. FOCs provide families with services across three areas: financial education and coaching; public benefits access; employment and career placement and development. These core services are integrated together and provided to clients in a bundled fashion in order to reinforce one another and to provide a multi-faceted approach to family stability, income and wealth building.

FOC Coach will use a strong interpersonal and communication skills and experience working with low-income individuals to deliver financial coaching services to FOC clients, and to assist clients with short-term housing and financial needs while working to support the development of financial skills and behaviors necessary to become self-sufficient and well-versed in the long-term management of their economic resources.

Under the supervision of the LSS Program Manager, this position is responsible for providing direct coaching services to clients of the LSS Financial Opportunity Center, including referrals under The Stable Families Project. This position will also be responsible for facilitating group-based education workshops related to housing, employment and/or financial literacy as scheduled/recommended by the LSS Program Manager.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelors Degree in Social Work or related field preferred.
  • Experience in a social work or human services agency with recognized standards and policies.
  • Two or more years experience serving low-income populations preferred.
  • Strong communication skills and experience with written communication, electronic communication, and presentations to individuals and groups both internal and external to the organization.
  • Computer skills which should include spreadsheet generation, word processing, database management, and electronic communications.
  • Experience with Salesforce and HMIS on-line database systems preferred.
  • Excellent social/interpersonal skills and writing ability commensurate with the communication and reporting requirements of the position.
  • A problem solver and self-starter, who demonstrates the ability to think fast on his/her feet; able to multi-task; attentive to detail.
  • Demonstrated ability to work as part of a cross-functional team.
  • Knowledge of available Toledo community resources.
  • Well-organized, with the ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities with attention to detail. Availability to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends and holidays. Available as a resource during non-working hours via phone.*
  • Maintain certification in CPR, First Aid and Non-Violent Crisis Intervention per LSS standards.
  • Background screening required, including but not limited to: OBCI fingerprints, drug test, Ohio’s Central Registry on Child Abuse & Neglect, and reference checks.
  • Valid Driver’s License with insurable driving history is required.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Provide one-on-one coaching services to FOC participants including assessing financial situations and helping clients develop realistic spending, savings, and debt management plans, improving or building credit, developing emergency savings funds, and building assets (retirement, education, housing, etc.), obtain employment, and increase income.
  • Conduct client orientation into Financial Opportunity Center (FOC) and The Stable Families Project.
  • Manage outcome tracking system (Salesforce) and documentation requirement for the financial coaching component of FOC, and HMIS data for the housing component of the FOC program.
  • Maintain client files and respond to requests for additional information from LSS Program Manager in a timely manner.
  • Work as a member of the cross-functional team providing services for clients enrolled in the FOC, sharing information, participating in team and network meetings, and helping to track client progress and outcomes.
  • Maintain documentation and reporting of services rendered in accordance with LSS policies and procedures and ODMH/ODADAS/COA standards.
  • Represent the program in a positive and professional manner, both in the workplace and in the community.
  • Participate in supervision/educational activities to enhance professional and job-related skills.
  • All other duties as assigned.

WORK ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Must be able to cope with mental and emotional stress related to working with persons who are experiencing familial instability, mental health concerns, and other related crises.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee must communicate face-to-face, in writing and via electronic communications using fine and gross motor skills.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be standing or walking for extended periods of time, may also be seated for extended periods of time.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be required to travel by vehicle or accompany clients to off-site locations.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee must also be able to bend, reach, and lift (with or without assistance) 10 lbs.
  • Must be able to complete the following certifications/trainings within first 90 days of employment: Financial Coaching; Ohio Benefits Bank Counselor; Bridges Out of Poverty; Accenture; FDIC Money Smart; Salesforce; HMIS; Credit Counseling; Accenture Career Success Skills; Ready to Rent Facilitator
