President/CEO

    BBB Serving Northwest and West Central Ohio and Southeast Michigan, Inc. (Toledo BBB) is seeking an individual to serve as President/CEO.

BBB Serving NW & WC Ohio and SE Michigan serves a 24-county area of Ohio and Michigan from its offices in Sylvania and Lima, Ohio. BBB has approximately 6,000 dues paying Accredited Businesses and an annual budget of approximately $2.5 million. Established in 1919, it is a 501(c)(6) “business league” which also operates a 501(c)(3) not for profit Foundation.

BBB is a business ethics association. It was founded and is supported by the ethical business community with the goal of establishing and maintaining an ethical marketplace for consumers and businesses alike. BBBs have the mission of fostering honest and responsive relationships between businesses and consumers, instilling consumer confidence and advancing a trustworthy marketplace for all. It currently has 19 employees and 15 Board members.

The President of BBB oversees and is responsible for the actions, policies, and procedures of the Toledo BBB under the direction of the Board of Directors. This includes effective management of day-to-day operations, including oversight of functions such as operations, financial activities, staffing, sales and marketing, charity review, public visibility, consumer education, investigations, advertising review, service to Accredited Businesses, oversight of the BBB Foundation and all other activities of the BBB. The President does extensive media alerts and consumer advisories on television, radio, print media and social media. S/he prepares regular information and advisories to the Accredited Businesses through print or electronic formats.

Ideal candidates will have a proven track record of leadership in their respective professional careers. The position requires strong written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills; the ability to effectively interact with businesses and consumers and the ability to work with a wide range of personalities. Additionally, the candidate must possess the ability to motivate and manage staff to achieve objectives, and to simultaneously manage multiple projects. Experience in policy formation, media relations, budget development, strategic planning and implementation is very helpful.

The BBB President oversees an effective program for accreditation, accreditation services and accreditation growth and retention with the guidance and assistance of the Vice President/Marketing, other key staff and the Board of Directors. The following of ethical marketing practices as established by the International Association of BBBs (IABBB) is essential.

The President creates the annual budget for review and approval by the Board of Directors and oversees budget revisions as needed through the year. S/he works with key BBB leadership to insure that spending initiatives are consistent with budget and BBB objectives.

Working with the Vice President/Operations, the President ensures effective and comprehensive personnel policies to ensure fair, respectful, and equitable employment policies and practices. These include job descriptions, performance standards and evaluations, and compensation programs. S/he assumes final responsibility for hiring, evaluation, promotion, discipline, and dismissal of employees. S/he manages, develops, and inspires the leadership team to work in an integrated yet entrepreneurial way to achieve major goals. The goal is to create a healthy, respectful, and collaborative work environment.

The BBB President oversees the expansion of the organization’s visibility and membership penetration in the BBB Service Area. S/he maintains effective public relations, education, and community outreach programs. In this regard, BBB shall develop strategic, collaborative partnerships with local leaders around issues and opportunities of common interest, as well as provide primary relationship management to member businesses of significance.

The Toledo BBB has been active in supplemental programs, working with corporate vendors such as Paramount (health care), Sheakley (Workers Compensation), and others. These relationships provide valuable additional benefits to many Accredited Businesses and generate significant non-dues revenue for BBB.

The BBB President is an articulate and effective communicator with strong verbal and written communication skills. S/he represents the BBB at public events, serves as the primary media spokesperson, and is comfortable doing media (TV, radio, print and social media). The President gives regular speeches at business and community groups throughout the 24-county service area.

The BBB President should have strong business and financial skills; be able to make action-driven decisions, and effectively prioritize and manage multiple tasks. BBB represents the entire business community and provides services to all consumers throughout the marketplace. A high priority is fostering positive relationships with the various minority communities and religious groups. Language skills can be valuable.

The position requires occasional non-traditional hours, including attendance at various community meetings/events.  It requires driving and travel throughout the year and may require overnight travel to BBB conferences and/or meetings as needed.
