SUMMARY
The Toledo Museum of Art seeks an entrepreneurial and dynamic leader to build a development platform that aligns with the ambition of the management team to be a model museum for its industry. Reporting to the Director, the Director of Development is responsible for the oversight, planning and implementation of a comprehensive development program that secures significant financial resources from foundations, corporations, and individuals to sustainably support the Museum. This position sets strategy for all major membership and gift functions, which includes major gift identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship, planned-giving, principal gift solicitation, donor prospecting and research, special multi-year fundraising campaigns and grant strategies. The Director of Development has responsibility for a multi-disciplinary development team and motivates and coordinates team efforts. They guide the Director and board in their fundraising work, while engaging in their own portfolio management of a select group of prospects. As part of the executive team, this role focuses on long-range strategic priorities, communicating of the Museum’s vision to others, and advancing the Museum’s goals, including cultivating national and international philanthropy.
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES
  • Designs overall fundraising strategy to achieve Museum’s ongoing membership, development, and campaign goals.
  • Assesses the current operations of the development department and develops a plan to systematically strengthen the organization to meet future priorities through structure, process, and tools.
  • Defines the development team structure, roles, and responsibilities. Selects, hires, advances and mentors team members. Provides leadership to multi-disciplinary team by establishing clear direction and benchmarks, setting stretch goals and objectives, as well as providing mentoring and training opportunities.
  • Expands member and donor base by identifying and engaging next generation members, donors, and leaders. Creates robust membership and annual giving programs to engage membership.
  • Works extensively with the Director, leadership team, and board to realize the Museum’s membership, philanthropic, grant strategy and campaign objectives, embracing the mission of the Museum.
  • Develops and implements a strategy for individual major donors and foundations through identification, qualification, cultivation, solicitation, stewardship, and recognition. This includes preparing professional written proposals and grants, gift agreements, and other materials needed to define, secure and document major gifts. Ensures record keeping and tracking of all portfolio activities in Raiser’s Edge.
  • Arranges cultivation and solicitation visits with donors, prospects, and grant-makers including management of the Georgia Welles Apollo Society and TMA Art Travel programs. Participates in the development of marketing materials for major gift cultivation and stewardship activities/events in partnership with the Marketing department.
  • Cultivates relationships with donors, grant-makers, and the community by maintaining reputation, visibility, and responsiveness.
  • Serves as a member of the Museum’s leadership team.
  • Participates in Museum board functions. Works with the Director to manage Board Terms and Nominations, acts as liaison with the Museum Board’s Development Committee, and participates in Board meetings regarding in fundraising strategies.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned.
RELATIONSHIPS
  • Works closely with Director, TMA Board, leadership team as well as TMA affiliate groups:  Ambassadors, Docents and Circle.
  • Significant collaboration with TMA management and individuals at all levels of the organization to promote philanthropic programming.
  • Leads multi-disciplinary team, with frequent interactions with other museum departments.
  • Meets extensively and regularly with potential donors, community partners and government representatives.
SPECIALIZED KNOWLEDGE, COMPETENCIES AND ABILITIES
  • Bachelor’s degree required, master’s degree and/or CFRE preferred.
  • Extensive (10+ years) experience in fundraising with deep knowledge of fundraising principles that span membership, capital, and endowment campaigns as well as grants, annual giving, planned-giving and gifts of art, preferably in a large institutional setting.
  • 5+ years management experience including ability to motivate, lead, set objectives and manage performance of a large multi-disciplinary team.
  • Prior success in the development and negotiation of high-level gifts and a track record of successful solicitation of six and seven-figure individual and institutional gifts (foundations, corporations, and government).
  • Expert knowledge of current and evolving trends in membership, grants, major gifts giving, solicitation and campaigns.  Balances long term strategic thinking with the ability to tactically implement.
  • History of using data, financial indicators, and analysis to evaluate strategic options.
  • Knowledge of Raisers Edge and/or other development tracking software.
  • Familiarity with trends in the civic and philanthropic marketplace.
  • Exceptional leader and listener. Keeps commitments, inspires trust, and upholds museum values.
  • Impeccable written and oral communication skills.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
The person in this position frequently attends campaign and development events inside and outside of TMA, with non-standard work hours, including weekends, and occasional overnight travel. Position requires ability operate a computer and other office equipment such as copy machine, printer and phone system.
