Job Title: Director of Development

Primary Function

The Director of Development is responsible for planning, organizing, and directing Sauder Village’s fundraising efforts including major gifts, annual fund, planned giving, donor events and capital campaigns. The position works closely with the President & CEO and the Board of Trustees in all development and fundraising endeavors.

Essential Functions (Responsibilities)

  • Meet with prospective donors and current supporters on a continual basis to establish and maintain effective relationships.
  • Grow a major gifts program including identification, cultivation and solicitation of major donors.
  • Oversee grant seeking including research, proposal writing, and reporting requirements.
  • Build the planned giving program with a focus on deferred gifts such as bequest expectancies.
  • Direct the annual fund program, including mailings and annual fundraising drives.
  • Direct capital campaigns and other major fundraising drives.
  • Coordinate fundraising special events.
  • Oversee Staff campaigns.
  • Make public appearances/accept speaking engagements to share information about Sauder Village with the community.
  • Participate in board meetings and work with board members to cultivate donors.
  • Oversee fundraising database and tracking systems.
  • Collaborate with other fundraising staff.
  • Oversee creation of publications to support fund raising activities.
  • Facilitate gift recognition programs and appreciation events.
  • Embrace the mission and vision of Sauder Village and passionately share the stories.
  • Engage corporations in giving and sponsorship opportunities.

Skills, Requirements

  • Have strong interpersonal and writing skills.
  • Have knowledge and experience in fundraising techniques, particularly major gift fundraising.
  • Develop relationships and show appreciation to staff, board members and other volunteers.
  • Be a “self-starter” and goal driven to initiate donor visits and fundraising calls.
  • Be organized and exhibit “follow through” on tasks and goals.
  • Display a positive attitude, show concern for people and community, demonstrate presence, self-confidence, common sense and good listening ability.
  • Ability to work varying hours depending on events and circumstances.
  • Bachelor’s degree in a four year college or university, a minimum 5 years of experience in fund raising or combination of education & experience.
