SUMMARY
Provides design and production support in order to produce high-quality, appropriate collateral for Museum departments to enhance the visitor experience. Manages a variety of internal and external clients to develop designs that meet time, budget, and logistical constraints.
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES
The Graphic Design Assistant performs the following essential duties. Other duties may be assigned as needs arise.
Exhibition and Gallery Materials:
  • Assists the Senior Graphic Designer and Graphic Designer in creating exhibition assets to create a unified, engaging look for all exhibitions.
  • Designs materials to fit specifications per the exhibition identity.
  • Produces materials, such as signage, didactic panels, object labels, etc., to enhance Museum exhibition spaces.
  • Consistently carries exhibition branding through to other related designs.
  • Accountable for producing all museum gallery labels.
Other Museum Marketing Projects:
  • Assists the Senior Graphic Designer and Graphic Designer in developing high-quality, accurate designs and layouts for special Museum projects (including print collateral, advertising, signage, and web graphics).
  • Manages the photo/art requests for Marketing projects, seeking/requesting necessary copy, photographs, logos, etc.
  • Ensures all design solutions are consistent with the TMA brand and the Museum’s established graphic identity and style manual.
  • Produces final materials according to production specifications, recommending production methods and materials to maximize effectiveness and minimize cost.
RELATIONSHIPS
As a member of the Marketing and Public Relations department, the Graphic Design Assistant works closely with departments across the Museum including but not limited to Collections, Curatorial Affairs, Development, Education, Retail, Visitor Experience, Programs, and Special Events.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
  • Bachelor’s degree in Graphic Design or a related field.
  • Consideration will be given to candidates with active college enrollment status and at least 3 years of the equivalent combination of education and experience.
SPECIALIZED KNOWLEDGE, COMPETENCIES AND ABILITIES
  • Experience using variety of design tools and software, including Adobe Suite and Microsoft office.
  • Working knowledge of the design process from start to finish.
  • Must be able to multitask and deliver on appropriate deadlines.
  • Proficient with hands-on production, measuring, cutting, folding, and other post-print finishes.
  • Strong knowledge in visual communication strategy and illustration/graphic creation.
  • Effectively organizes resources, establishes priorities, and used time effectively and efficiently, while collaborating under direction of Senior Graphic Designer & Graphic Designer.
  • Work effectively using strong interpersonal skills to communicate with a variety of internal clients and external vendors to meet Museum goals and budgets including:
    • Preparing and sending final artwork to vendors
    • Reviewing proofs from vendors for final approval
    • Seeking final approval from client
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Standard open office work environment shared with co-workers, with related phone, computer and printer noise.  Position requires ability operate a computer and other office productivity machinery, such as a calculator, copy machine, printer, cutting devices and phone system; the person in this position frequently communicates with public membership and staff who have inquiries and must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations. May occasionally lift up to 25 pounds; Support given to various departments across campus may result in occasional exposure to uncomfortable weather conditions.
