Part-Time Senior Center Activities Assistant

Coordinates and facilitates the activities and delivers the support services of the Mayores South Toledo/Troy Central City Toledo senior centers under the oversight, guidance and direction of the Director of Senior Services. Coordinates the Senior Services volunteers. Works directly with participants in program activities.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Follows the guidance and management of the Director of Senior Services.
  • Responsible for monthly calendar of events, arranging trips, and speakers with approval of Director of Senior Services.
  • Advocates on behalf of seniors to obtain specific medical and social services to clients who request assistance.
  • Refers individuals to the specific agencies that can provide the needed services
  • Arranges transportation for seniors to agencies, shopping activities, doctors, as available.
  • Assists clients who need help in completing forms.
  • Keeps track of seniors who are not in attendance weekly for follow-up.
  • Accompanies seniors on out-of-center trips, as needed.
  • Prepares monthly reports or any other reports that are required.
  • Attends and helps in the planning of special events.
  • Will be required to work occasional evenings and weekends.
  • Order supplies, food, equipment needed for special events, speakers, or activities as assigned.
  • Assists with data entry and word processing as assigned.
  • Assists with content, development and distribution of senior center newsletter.
  • Assist with senior chores (errands) as needed.
  • Provide visitation services to seniors in their homes, hospital, or care center as assigned.
  • Performs other duties related to the Senior Services Center as assigned.
  • May be assigned to drive senior van as assigned by Senior Services Director; assist in van’s cleanliness, maintenance, inspections and logs reflecting the above.

Skills/Qualifications:

  • 2 years training or experience in the field of gerontology, recreation, sociology, psychology or a combination of professional background, training, and experience in activities development and coordination, preferred.
  • Computer experience/skill with Windows, Microsoft Office products is required; Internet and email programs preferred.
  • CPR Certified/ First Aid certified, or willingness to become certified.
  • Ability to lift minimum of 30 pounds, on occasion, when transporting items for seniors.
  • Must show sincere interest in working with the older adults as demonstrated through past involvement in providing social services, preferred.
  • Must be able to work harmoniously with other employees and relate well with other individuals.
  • Must have above average public relations and communication skills and commitment to the elderly.
  • Knowledge of community resources and of social service referral procedures and knowledge of benefits appropriate to the geriatric population, such as Social Security, Medicare, SNAP benefits.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) strongly preferred.
  • Valid Ohio driver’s license and reliable personal transportation with proof of insurance (meeting minimum state requirements) required, and 2 years of licensed driving experience.

Part-Time flexible hours Monday – Friday, no evenings, weekends, or holidays.
