Social Service Caseworker

GENERAL PURPOSE OF JOB.  Shall provide a variety of services to individuals in need and assist them with  identifying and addressing the root of the cause of their situation.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES.

 

  1. Maintain confidentiality to The Salvation Army and the staff of The Salvation Army in all job-related matters.
  2. Provide all forms of direct service to beneficiaries including, but not limited to intake/assessment, referrals, advocacy and the provision of material assistance based upon guidelines, available resources, and policies and procedures of The Salvation Army.
  3. Provide beneficiaries with information on and referrals to appropriate Salvation Army programs and other community resources.
  4. Establish and maintain a database of community resources in order to refer beneficiaries to other locations that may be helpful in addressing their needs.
  5. Discuss special cases with the NWOAS Director of Social Services in an attempt to resolve beneficiaries’ situations.
  6. Communicate with Caseworkers regarding diaper bank.  Place orders for diapers as needed with the Hospital and Jr League of Toledo.
  7. Refer beneficiaries seeking spiritual guidance to the Corps Officers.
  8. Assist in the team coordination of various social services programs, activities and services, including seasonal programming, such as; youth camp, Tools for School, Thanksgiving Assistance, Hope for the Holidays and the toy program.
  9. Keep abreast of community issues and services by visiting other community agencies.
  10. Participate in community meetings and collaborative networks to address issues that are relevant to the residents of the community.
  11. Represent The Salvation Army at social service community functions as deemed appropriate by the NWOAS Director of Social Services.
  12. Assist in the daily maintenance of the social services office organization. These tasks may include general office management such as typing, filing, computer use, mailing preparation.
  13. Assist with fulfilling duties of other social services staff as needed.
  14. Maintain confidential beneficiary files and accurate records with pertinent information including services provided and a plan of action.
  15. Coordinate monthly statistics and submit them accordingly.
  16. Coordinate the missing persons program in accordance with The Salvation Army policies and procedures.
  17. Coordinate all aspects of the food pantry in accordance with established policies.
  18. Order food items to adequately stock pantry with NWOAS Director of Social Services approval and budget allocation.
  19. Participate in and support implementation of special activities and events for Northwest Ohio Area Services and Corps programs as requested.

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: Supervise Social Service Food pantry aid in regards to day to day operation and established policies. Serve as the staff person in charge in the absence of the NWOAS Director of Social Services.

MINIMUM EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE.

  • BA in social services is required
  • A minimum of 3 years of work experience in social services or related field is preferred
  • Knowledge of community resources
  • Bilingual a plus but not required
  • Proficient spoken and written English
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Ability to organize responsibilities and function independently
  • Excellent time management skills required
  • Demonstrate excellent ability to engage with diverse populations
  • Ability to communicate clearly both verbally and in writing
  • Must have a high energy level and solid work ethic, as well as the ability to respond to changing conditions
  • Must work well in a team atmosphere
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and Google Chrome
  • Willingness to learn various used programs and databases
  • Will respect and promote the mission of The Salvation Army.
